UPDATE: A spokesperson for Fort Meade, Maryland, confirmed to WJZ that there was no active shooter Thursday morning, contrary to a tabloid ‘The Sun’ report.

A now-contained active shooter situation at Fort Meade in Maryland has resulted in multiple casualties. According to PIO Angie Streets, the incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday, CNN reported.

An emergency official said 5 people were injured in a shooting Thursday at the highly secure Fort Meade army base north of Washington, AFP reported on Thursday.

“We had an active shooter at 9:46. We have five casualties,” Jeffrey McClendon, emergency manager with the base emergency operations center, told AFP.

Mclendon stated that the shooter had been “contained,” but that the status of those injured was unknown.

However, the last post posted publicly by ‘Fort George G. Meade, Md’ on Facebook was about conducting an active shooter exercise. See screenshot below:
