One of the world’s largest container ships, Evergreen’s 20,388 TEU Ever Given, got stuck in the Suez Canal March 23, blocking traffic in both directions. According to reports, at one time seven tugs were working to free the 400 meter long by 58.8 meter beam ship, which ran aground at km 151 of the Suez Canal
According to new update via AFP, Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority said Wednesday it was trying to refloat the Taiwan-run, Panama-flagged MV Ever Given, a 400-metre (1,300-foot) long, 59-metre wide vessel which became wedged across the waterway after veering off course in a sandstorm.
“The Suez Canal will not spare any efforts to ensure the restoration of navigation and to serve the movement of global trade,” vowed Lt. Gen. Ossama Rabei, head of the Suez Canal Authority.
Reason: Evergreen Marine Corp., a major Taiwan-based shipping company that operates the ship, said in a statement that the Ever Given had been overcome by strong winds as it entered the canal from the Red Sea but none of its containers had sunk.
