At least 189 buildings have completely collapsed in Venezuela following the twin earthquakes that struck the country earlier this week, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said Sunday, as officials continued to assess the scale of the devastation.
Presenting the latest official damage assessment, Rodriguez said a total of 774 buildings had collapsed, including 189 that were destroyed entirely.
“There are 774 collapsed buildings, 189 of them total collapses,” Rodriguez said while outlining the government’s updated figures for the destruction caused by Wednesday’s powerful earthquakes.
Rodriguez also announced that the official death toll has risen to 1,450, an increase of 20 from Saturday’s reported figure, as rescue crews continue searching through the rubble in multiple affected areas. Authorities warned that the number of fatalities is expected to increase further as emergency teams gain access to heavily damaged communities.
The earthquakes, which struck Venezuela on Wednesday, caused widespread destruction to homes, public buildings, and critical infrastructure, leaving thousands of residents displaced and overwhelming emergency response efforts.
Meanwhile, the United Nations estimates that approximately 50,000 people remain missing in the aftermath of the disaster, underscoring the immense humanitarian crisis unfolding across the country. Search-and-rescue operations remain underway, while aid agencies are working to provide emergency shelter, medical care, food, and clean water to survivors.
