1 dead, 2 injured in shooting at Morris Jeff High graduation at Xavier University

Alabama police plead for tips in deadly birthday party shooting

Three people were shot on the Xavier University campus Tuesday near the school’s convocation center, according to New Orleans police.

A person was arrested at the scene by police. According to police, the three victims were taken to a nearby hospital. According to WDSU-TV, the shooting occurred following the graduation ceremonies for Morris Jeff Community School.

According to NOPD Deputy Supt. Christopher Goodly, an elderly woman expired as a result of her injuries, and two male victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.

At least three people have been detained for questioning, according to Goodly, but no arrests have been made as of 1:10 p.m.

According to Goodly, the incident started with an argument between two females in the parking lot and escalated into guns being drawn and shots being fired. The elderly woman who was hit was thought to be a bystander.

The shooting took place in a parking lot outside Convocation Center, which hosts a number of high school graduation ceremonies each spring. According to witnesses, a fight broke out shortly after the graduation ceremony ended, followed by anywhere from 5 to 12 gunshots.

The shooting comes just two weeks after four people were injured in a shooting outside of Southeastern Louisiana University’s graduation ceremony in Hammond.

Other information, including a possible motive, was not immediately available.
