According to a recent Gallup Poll, about 49% of Americans believe that all UFO sightings stem from some form of human activity. They rationalize unexplained events with natural phenomena. However, 37% of Americans believe UFOs are real alien spacecraft visiting Earth from other planets. The remaining 13% hold no opinion. Interestingly, at the same time, 78% of Americans believe that the United States government is hiding information pertaining to aerial encounters.
The report also mentions that the numbers of skeptics has declined, it was 60% in 2019 and the number had further fallen to 50% in 2021. Today, it is 49% amid an increasing number of classified files being released to the public under executive orders signed by President Donald Trump. As of August 2026, five sets of files have been released and the state has launched the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE). These files comprise transcripts from NASA and the FBI, eyewitness testimonies, unresolved cases and pilot logs concerning alien activity.
The younger generation is also skeptical of the government’s use of aliens as a PR shield. Critics proclaim that massive declassification orders are usually passed when highly controversial political events unfold. Therefore, aliens are used as a smokescreen by the state to distract citizens from domestic problems. While executive directives by President Trump were framed under the pretext of absolute transparency, political analysts note that such orders are issued suspiciously close to political failures. It has heightened cynicism among younger generations and the phrase “pay absolute attention to the sky, ignore the ground,” has gained popularity.
Media analysts have further analyzed the number of believers and skeptics through a generational lens. Young adults are more likely to reject extraterrestrial explanations, while middle-aged adults are more likely to believe in aliens. This can be attributed to a gap in media literacy. The younger generation has greater access to information and technology, allowing them to heavily rely on explanations provided by modern science.
In addition, only 17% of Americans claim that they have personally witnessed a UFO sighting. Among this group, 61% believe that UFOs carry extraterrestrial beings from other planets. Therefore, witnesses are approximately twice as likely to reject explanations linking UFO sightings to human activity. This cements the “seeing is believing” effect.
Throughout history, aliens have been a topic of massive interest. The changing public attitudes amidst changing global events provides valuable insight into citizens thought process regarding belief in the unseen.
