Alabama police plead for tips in deadly birthday party shooting

According to college officials, there is an active shooter on the Bridgewater College campus.

“Reports of active shooter on campus. Shelter in place,” Bridgewater College wrote in a tweet.

The college has ordered everyone to take cover. The Virginia State Police have arrived on the scene.

“Continue to shelter in place. We will share more information when it’s made available to us,” Bridgewater College updated on Twitter.

“Situation is ongoing. We are communicating with authorities. Will update. Text to let your loved ones know you are okay,” the college said in its fifth tweet.

According to ABC News, at least one law enforcement officer was shot in a gun-related incident at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia.

“BRCC is under a modified lockdown. There are reports of an active shooter at Bridgewater College and out of an abundance of caution we are under modified lockdown,” said Blue Ridge Community College. “This means that doors to buildings are locked until we are notified the situation in Bridgewater is cleared.”

Virginia Gov. Glenn Younkin said that he was following the situation.

“I have been briefed on the situation at Bridgewater College. The shooter is in custody and state and local police are on the scene. I will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with law enforcement.”

The town of Bridgewater issued a public advisory on its website around the same time Tuesday afternoon, advising residents to avoid the college and its surrounding area until further notice.

UPDATE 6:15 PM EST: Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson died after responding to an active shooter situation at Virginia’s Bridgewater College. Both had sustained gunshot wounds.
