Apple Is Also Bringing an iPhone Duo Max: report

Apple may already be planning a larger version of its newly announced iPhone Duo, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that the company could eventually introduce an “iPhone Duo Max” as part of a broader family of foldable devices.

The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, debuted with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage and is available in configurations up to 2TB. But Apple’s foldable strategy may extend well beyond a single premium model.

According to Gurman, Apple deliberately chose the “Duo” name rather than the previously rumored “Ultra” branding because it gives the company more room to expand the lineup. The three-letter name also fits alongside Apple’s existing Air and Pro labels. More importantly, it can be paired with familiar suffixes such as Max, mini and SE without creating awkward product names.

That could eventually lead to several versions of the foldable iPhone, including a larger Duo Max, a lower-cost Duo SE and potentially a smaller clamshell-style Duo mini. There is no confirmed timetable for any of those products, and Apple’s future plans are likely to depend heavily on how well the first-generation Duo performs.

What an iPhone Duo Max could offer

Gurman has not provided exact specifications for the iPhone Duo Max, but the name strongly suggests a larger display than the 7.6-inch panel used in the current model. Tom’s Guide speculates that Apple could add roughly an inch or two to the unfolded screen, pushing the device closer to compact-tablet territory.

A larger chassis could give Apple more room for components. The standard Duo uses a dual-battery design and an advanced thermal system built around a vapor chamber. With additional internal space, a Max model could potentially accommodate a larger battery, expanded cooling hardware or other upgrades designed to support the bigger screen.

The camera system is another area where Apple could differentiate the device. The current Duo has two 48-megapixel rear cameras, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max includes a third telephoto camera. A larger foldable could theoretically provide enough room for a three-camera setup, although there is currently no report confirming such a change.

Pricing would also be a major question. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, while the 2TB version costs $3,199. If Apple follows the pricing structure used across its other iPhone families, a Duo Max would almost certainly sit above the standard model. That could push its entry price beyond $2,000 and reinforce the foldable line as one of Apple’s most premium product categories.

Apple has also confirmed Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo later this year. On a larger iPhone Duo Max, stylus support could become even more useful for handwritten notes, sketching, document markup and multitasking. A significantly larger inner display could also bring it into closer competition with the iPad mini and other compact tablets.

Apple could turn Duo into a foldable family

The possibility of a Duo Max appears to be part of a wider strategy rather than a one-off experiment. Gurman says Apple could eventually offer multiple foldable designs, potentially including a cheaper SE model and a smaller clamshell-style device.

Such an expansion would mirror the way Apple has created different tiers around the traditional iPhone. It could also help the company reach buyers who like the foldable concept but find the $1,999 starting price difficult to justify. Lower-cost foldables remain uncommon, however, partly because flexible displays and sophisticated hinge mechanisms are expensive to manufacture.

Recent reports claim Apple is paying Samsung Display about $250 for each iPhone Duo folding panel under a multi-year supply arrangement. Estimates for replacing a damaged inner display have also exceeded $1,000, highlighting the cost of the technology behind the new form factor.

Foldable phones could become more mainstream

Foldable smartphones remain a relatively small part of the wider foldable-phone market. IDC estimates that foldables will account for about 2.2% of global smartphone shipments in 2026, rising to 3.1% by 2030. Despite their limited unit share, higher selling prices make the category more significant in revenue terms.

Apple’s arrival could accelerate that growth. Analysts cited by Reuters expect the company to quickly secure a substantial portion of the foldable market, challenging established players such as Samsung and Huawei.

The first iPhone Duo may therefore be less about a single device and more about establishing a new branch of the iPhone lineup. If demand is strong, a Duo Max could give Apple a larger, more productivity-focused foldable, while future mini or SE versions could broaden the category further.

For now, Apple has announced only the standard iPhone Duo. But the choice of the Duo name suggests the company has left itself plenty of room to build something much bigger around it.
