Belarus has detained an alleged Japanese spy who was operating in the country, state TV reported Wednesday.

“An agent from the Land of the Rising Sun was caught,” the state-owned All-National TV network said in a statement and a short TV clip posted on social media.

It said the alleged agent was caught filming military infrastructure and had tried to uncover details on Chinese investment into Belarus, as well as the situation on the border between Belarus and Ukraine.

Belarus is a close ally of Moscow, with President Alexander Lukashenko letting Russia invade Ukraine through its territory.

State TV broadcast images of what it said was the Japanese spy confessing.

“My actions could be dangerous for Belarus,” he was filmed saying in broken Russian.

At one point he mentions a “rocket attack on Belarus” while standing handcuffed and surrounded by security agents at a train station.

There was no official statement by Minsk on the arrest.
