In a stark public warning written in his essay, Bill Gates says humanity is unprepared for the consequences of the rise of advanced AI technologies. He says humanity could lose control of powerful AI models, which will begin acting against our interests. In a comprehensive 6,000-word essay published during the Gates Foundation Goalkeepers Report Launch, Gates has warned the public of the turbulent times that lie ahead.

The essay notes, “The technology is improving faster than anyone expected and in surprising ways, and as the models become more powerful, they could begin to act against our interests and we could lose control.”

AI could advance and act against human interests

Gates extensively outlined the societal and long-term existential threats of AI. He notes that AI models occasionally behave in unpredictable ways that are not intended by their creators. As their capabilities increase, they may eventually begin acting against human interests. Therefore, humans will cease to hold any control over the destruction that will follow.

Malicious actors could exploit AI to conduct cyberattacks, fraud operations, and bioterrorism. Therefore, AI empowers bad actors by allowing them to weaponize AI’s capabilities. Critical infrastructure such as power grids, nuclear stations, and hospitals remain highly vulnerable to these risks.

AI will also significantly reduce entry-level and mid-level jobs, causing layoffs on a massive scale across the globe. This will plunge humanity into one of the deepest economic crises in history.

Bill Gates calls for international AI regulation

In his essay, Gates emphasizes the importance of a unified international safety institution that regulates AI development. The instituion should be modeled on frameworks employed by the United Nations. It is essential to fill the vacuum of leadership that surrounds AI and establish global safety standards.

A unified intervention is necessary to ensure that AI tools do not deepen global inequality and help mitigate its risks. Gates believes that meaningful use of AI can positively transform the world by making lifesaving drug discoveries and introducing improvements in education. Therefore, international regulations are essential to democratize AI access and mitigate safety concerns.
