Cambodia was declared Covid-19-free on Tuesday after the last patient recovered, according to a statement from the Health Ministry.
According to the statement, there have been no new cases reported in the country in the last 31 days, according to Xinhua news agency.
Since the outbreak began in January 2020, the Southeast Asian country has recorded 136,262 confirmed cases, 133,206 recoveries, and 3,056 deaths.
Or Vandine, a Ministry spokeswoman, attributed the country’s success in controlling the pandemic to strong government leadership and the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.
“Prime Minister Hun Sen made the right and timely decision to provide free Covid-19 vaccines to all eligible Cambodians and foreigners living in the country,” she told reporters.
“Vaccines are the most powerful tool to protect lives against Covid-19, reducing infections and deaths.”
Over 15 million people, or 94% of its 16 million population, have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Ministry, with 14.3 million, or 89%, fully immunized with two shots.
In addition, 9.25 million people, or 58%, received a third dose, and 2.58 million people, or 16%, received a fourth shot.
Cambodia will begin providing a fifth dose to priority groups on Thursday.
Cambodia has resumed all socioeconomic activities and reopened its borders to fully vaccinated travellers without quarantine since November last year, owing to its high inoculation rates.
