Authorities in Vinton County have issued mandatory evacuations for the Village of Zaleski and nearby areas after a significant chemical leak was reported at the Austin Powder Plant. Emergency officials have confirmed the release of an anhydrous nitric acid plume, a highly toxic substance.

The Vinton County Sheriff’s Office announced the evacuation early Thursday via social media, urging residents near Creek Road, Morgan Road, Infirmary Road, and State Route 677 to leave immediately. Roadblocks have been established, and residents are advised to avoid the affected zone by traveling east on Route 278 toward U.S. 50.

Emergency shelter has been set up at Vinton County High School (307 West High Street, McArthur, Ohio) for displaced residents with no alternative housing options.

According to Athens County Emergency Management, the leak originated from a 50,000-gallon storage tank at the Austin Powder facility, known locally as the Red Diamond Plant. The company’s website states the plant has been operational since 1930 and employs around 250 people, making it the largest employer in Vinton County.

The National Library of Medicine classifies nitric acid as highly corrosive and dangerous when inhaled, posing serious health risks and environmental hazards. As of now, officials report that the toxic plume remains contained within Vinton County limits.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a temporary flight restriction over a 30-nautical-mile radius surrounding the incident site to support emergency response operations and ensure public safety.

Neighboring Jackson County Emergency Management is also assisting in the response effort. Officials are closely monitoring air quality and the spread of the chemical plume.

Zaleski, home to approximately 230 residents according to the 2020 U.S. Census, remains under evacuation as first responders continue to manage the hazardous materials emergency.

Local authorities urge anyone in the region to stay updated via official channels and avoid travel in and around the evacuation zone until further notice.
