China on Thursday condemned “brazen chattering” from the United States over upcoming elections in Taiwan, after Washington warned Beijing against stoking tensions over the polls.

China “expresses… resolute opposition to the American side’s brazen chattering about the elections in the Taiwan region”, foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, warning Taiwan “is the number one red line that must not be transgressed in the China-US relationship”.
