A Chinese defence spokesperson warned that if US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, the Chinese military will not sit back, Xinhua reported Tuesday.
Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, made the comments in response to a press inquiry about the situation.
Tan said that if the US side insists on making the visit, the Chinese military will take strong actions to thwart any external interference or “Taiwan independence” separatist scheme, and will be steadfast in safeguarding China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Tan noted that the Chinese side has repeatedly expressed its strong opposition to Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan.
“If Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, it would seriously violate the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three China-US joint communiques, seriously harm China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and seriously damage the political foundation of China-US relations,” Tan said.
It will inevitably harm relations between the two countries and militaries, leading to further escalation of tensions across the Taiwan Strait, according to the spokesperson.
