According to media reports, Beijing‘s population will fall for the first time in 19 years in 2022.

CNN reported on Thursday, citing official data, that the Chinese capital’s permanent resident population fell from 21.88 million in 2021 to 21.84 million in 2022.

Meanwhile, the number of migrants in Beijing fell during the same time period.

The last time Beijing saw more deaths than births was in 2003, when the deadly severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak broke out in southern China and infected over 8,000 people worldwide.

The data revealed that the drop in 2022 will be relatively minor, with the population’s natural growth rate falling to -0.05 per thousand residents.

Meanwhile, for the first time since the Great Famine of 1961, China’s national population shrank last year.

According to the CNN report, the drop is due to a combination of factors, including the far-reaching consequences of China‘s one-child policy, which was implemented in the 1980s but has since been abandoned; changing attitudes towards marriage and family among Chinese youth; entrenched gender inequality; and the challenges of raising children in China’s expensive cities.
