The Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus is causing a sudden surge in cases in China, with multiple cities, including Beijing and Wuhan, reporting clusters of positive cases.

Seven people tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, where the coronavirus pandemic is thought to have started in December 2019.

According to Xinhua news agency, the infected people were identified as migrant workers at the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone’s headquarters on Covid-19 prevention and control.

One of the workers was at a train station in the Hubei city of Jingzhou, where a tour group from Jiangsu province was also waiting.

Members of the tour group tested positive as well.

According to the headquarters, the other six reported cases are close contacts of the worker.

For over a year, Wuhan had not reported any locally transmitted cases.
