A loudspeaker-equipped drone approached a man in the water at night and ordered him to return to shore at a beach in Qingdao, a coastal city in China’s Shandong province.
Video of the encounter circulated widely on social media on July 26 and 27. Haberler and Newsbomb reported that the man had entered the sea after designated swimming hours and that the drone warned him about a nighttime swimming restriction.
The footage shows the drone descending close to the man as he stands or moves through shallow water. A warning is then broadcast through a speaker attached to the aircraft, directing him to leave the sea.
Some reports described the drone as being controlled by local security personnel. However, no official statement reviewed for this report identifies who operated the aircraft.
Why swimming was restricted
Qingdao’s officially managed bathing beaches do not provide unrestricted swimming access around the clock. Municipal regulations allow the city to establish operating hours for swimming services, while beach managers can suspend swimming because of dangerous conditions or other safety concerns.
Official guidance issued when Qingdao’s nine bathing beaches opened for the 2026 season told visitors not to enter the water when a beach is closed and to return to shore immediately when instructed. It also advised swimmers to follow warning flags, broadcasts and directions from beach personnel.
The city has also incorporated drones into its coastal safety operations. Qingdao’s urban-management department said drones, infrared equipment and smart flotation devices were among the technologies deployed at local beaches for drowning prevention and emergency response during the 2026 swimming season.
That broader program makes the use of a loudspeaker drone at a Qingdao beach plausible, but the available official material does not directly document this particular encounter.
What remains unconfirmed
The reports reviewed do not name the beach where the video was recorded. They also do not provide the date of the encounter, identify the man or reproduce an official police or municipal account of what happened.
There is also no confirmed indication that the man was arrested, fined or otherwise punished. The circulated footage shows the warning and the drone’s close approach, but it does not show any subsequent enforcement action.
