The European Union on Tuesday declared a group of Russian diplomats working with the EU institutions “persona non grata”, setting in motion their possible expulsion from Belgium.

“I decided to designate persona non grata a number of officials for the permanent mission of the Russian Federation to the EU for engaging in activities contrary to their diplomatic status,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said at a news briefing.

The EU’s foreign affairs service “is summoning the Russian ambassador to the EU today to communicate this decision,” Borrell said.
