European stock markets closed sharply lower on Friday as fears over the health of the banking sector persisted.

London’s FTSE 100 index fell 1.3 percent while the Paris CAC 40 and Frankfurt DAX both shed around 1.7 percent, with a selloff in Deutsche Bank leading a drop in banking shares.
