A phone and internet outage across parts of Greenland this week was linked to the massive power outage on the Iberian Peninsula, the Greenlandic operator Tusass said.

“We depend on international networks. Therefore, electricity problems in Spain can, in rare situations, affect communications in Greenland, which unfortunately happened” on Monday, Jonas Hasselriis, Tusass director of operations, said in a statement published late Tuesday.

Tusass said on Monday that it had lost communications with its equipment in Maspalomas in Spain, which it relies on to supply customers in its satellite area.

The outage knocked out phone, SMS and internet connections for thousands of Greenlanders from Monday evening at 1930 GMT until Tuesday at 0136 GMT.

“We will draw on the lessons learned from this power outage in our future work,” Hasselriis said.

The outage affected the most northern and southern parts of Greenland.
