Heavy snowfall has disrupted flight services and road traffic across Turkey, including the major cities of Istanbul and Ankara, and meteorologists have warned that the cold spell could last until the end of next week.
“This is one of the longest cold spells in the last decade,” he explained.
On Saturday and Sunday, Turkish Airlines announced that 77 flights from Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport, located on the Asian side of the city, were cancelled or delayed due to weather conditions.
Istanbul’s land traffic has also been disrupted. The Turkish State Meteorological Services reported up to 20 cm of snow in some parts of the city.
Despite the efforts of municipal rescue trucks and hundreds of workers, roads in Ankara were covered in a thick blanket of snow, disrupting traffic.
In the last five days, severe snowfall has also fallen in the country’s eastern and southeastern provinces.
According to local authorities, the city of Gaziantep was hit particularly hard by a snowstorm, the heaviest in the last 50 years, wreaking havoc.
Diyarbakir, the region’s main city, has also been blanketed in snow, causing major traffic disruptions.
While heavy snowfall has its drawbacks, it is also a boon for the country, which is suffering from a drought.
Authorities have stated that the snowfall following a dry spell will benefit the country’s hydro dams.
