Hunter Biden is preparing to enter the cryptocurrency market with a memecoin named LAPTOP, turning one of the most recognizable controversies surrounding him into a blockchain project.

The memecoin is scheduled to launch Sept. 9 on Base, with Hunter Biden using the LAPTOP name as the centerpiece of the new crypto venture. Its name refers to the computer Biden left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019. Its contents, including emails and text messages, were later made public and became a major political issue ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

A politically charged token rollout

LAPTOP will have a total supply of 1 billion tokens, with founders, including Biden, allocated 30% of the supply. Those tokens will be locked for six months and are expected to vest over more than two years.

Another 20% is planned for airdrops. Potential recipients include wallets that lost money holding Donald Trump’s TRUMP memecoin, subscribers to Biden’s Substack and people on a mailing list operated by video journalist Andrew Callaghan, described as a friend of Biden.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that another 20% of the supply is designated for charitable and operational purposes.

The LAPTOP memecoin backed by Hunter Biden also includes a politically themed token-burning plan. As much as 30% of the supply could be permanently removed from circulation if 30 specified political and market events occur.

Conditions include a Democratic victory in the 2028 presidential election, bitcoin reaching a new all-time high and LAPTOP’s market capitalization overtaking TRUMP.

Memecoin rivalry moves onto the blockchain

Hunter Biden teased the LAPTOP ticker on X alongside a montage of television news clips discussing his laptop. The memecoin launch places the project in direct contrast with Trump-linked crypto ventures and appears designed to capitalize on the combination of politics, internet culture and speculation that has fueled high-profile memecoins.

TRUMP, launched in early 2025, briefly reached a market capitalization of about $15 billion before falling sharply. CoinDesk reported that it was trading near $2, giving the token a market value of roughly $600 million at the time of publication.

Memecoins generally draw their appeal from branding, online communities and speculation rather than traditional utility. In this case, the branding is unusually personal, with Biden taking an object that became a defining political controversy and attempting to transform it into a tradable digital asset.

For Hunter Biden, the LAPTOP memecoin turns a long-running political controversy into the identity of a speculative cryptocurrency project.
