Hyundai Mobis, South Korea’s largest auto parts manufacturer, announced on Monday that it has created a foldable steering wheel for future vehicles.

After two years of research, Hyundai Motor Group’s affiliate claimed to have developed a foldable steering system. The company stated that it is currently working on obtaining patents for the new system.

The system includes a steering wheel that can be folded inside the dashboard and moved back and forth by up to 25 centimetres to make more room for the driver’s seat.

After folding the steering wheel, the driver’s seat can be rotated 180 degrees to face passengers in the rear seats.

According to the Yonhap news agency, Hyundai Mobis used steer-by-wire (SBW) technology with the system to ensure durability and safety.

SBW is a solution that sends electrical signals to wheels to control steering. It eliminates the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels, allowing for more comfortable and responsive steering.

Hyundai Mobis plans to expand its presence in future mobility sectors, including autonomous vehicles, with the new system, as well as develop more advanced auto solutions that will be useful to global automakers.
