Internet users in several cities across Pakistan have reported slow speeds and connectivity problems, disrupting browsing, communication and access to online services.
Downdetector, a platform that tracks disruptions to digital services, has also recorded complaints from users in different parts of the country.
The cause of the latest slowdown remains unclear, and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
Pakistan has experienced similar disruptions in the recent past. In August 2024, the PTA said internet speeds had been affected by faults in two international submarine cables connecting the country to global networks. One cable was damaged near Karachi, while another experienced an outage linked to traffic rerouting between Iran and Qatar.
In January 2025, users again faced possible disruptions after a fault was reported in the AAE-1 submarine cable near Qatar. Such faults can reduce available international bandwidth and overload alternative routes, resulting in slower speeds and unstable connections.
Internet and mobile data services have also previously been restricted during elections, protests and security operations. However, there is currently no official indication that the latest complaints are linked to restrictions or an undersea cable fault.
Meanwhile, users have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report slow internet speeds and difficulties accessing online platforms.
