A powerful earthquake struck Japan’s northern Pacific coast on Monday, triggering tsunami warnings as two 40-centimetre waves were recorded and local media reported injuries.
The United States Geological Survey said the magnitude 7.6 quake hit at 14:15 GMT off the coast of Misawa, at a depth of 53 kilometres (33 miles). Following the tremor, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for parts of the region.
The first wave struck a port in Aomori Prefecture—where Misawa is located—at 11:43 pm local time (14:43 GMT). Seven minutes later, at 11:50 pm, another wave reached the town of Urakawa in Hokkaido, the agency said.
Both waves measured approximately 40 centimetres (16 inches).
