The Sui Southern Gas Company said Sunday that the Karachi gas smell reported in several areas came from odorant testing, not a leak. The utility, known as SSGC, linked the smell to new pipeline work near Abul Hasan Ispahani Road.
SSGC said workers temporarily increased the amount of odorant in natural gas. Odorant is the chemical that gives natural gas its sharp smell, so people can detect leaks early.
“The system pressures remain normal, and no gas leakage has been reported,” SSGC said in its statement.
Why the smell got stronger
According to SSGC, the higher odorant level made the gas smell stronger in some areas. So residents in different localities reported suspected leaks.
But SSGC said the smell came from odorization plant testing. The company said the testing formed part of commissioning a new pipeline near Abul Hasan Ispahani Road.
SSGC urged consumers to stay calm and continue their daily routines. Business Recorder also confirmed Sunday that system pressures stayed normal and that no leaks had turned up in the network.
Earlier Karachi gas case
Geo News also cited an earlier Karachi case involving SSGC. A local court found the company guilty of negligence in April 2026 over a gas line explosion in Orangi Town’s Millat Colony in 2022.
Two citizens died in that 2022 blast. Karachi West Senior Civil Judge Salman Amjad Siddiqui delivered the verdict on April 7, according to Geo News.
The judge ordered SSGC to pay Rs30 million in compensation to the affected family within one month. Geo News said a citizen named Aliza filed the civil suit after her parents died in the explosion.
Aliza’s lawyer, Advocate Usman Farooq, argued that SSGC bore responsibility for gas distribution and maintenance. He said the company failed to repair a faulty line despite repeated leakage complaints in the area. Geo News reported that Aliza had sought Rs42.8 million in damages.
