President Donald Trump announced that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position at the end of August, with Leavitt saying she made the “bittersweet decision” to step away so she can devote more time to her two young children.
In a statement following Trump’s announcement, Leavitt described serving as White House press secretary as “the honor and adventure of a lifetime” and thanked Trump for giving her the opportunity to represent his administration from the White House podium.
“I am thankful to the President for entrusting me with the distinct privilege of speaking on his behalf at the White House podium,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt said becoming a mother while holding one of the most demanding positions in the administration ultimately influenced her decision.
“Since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary,” she said.
Trump praised Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides and said she will remain in his political orbit as one of his top outside advisers. Leavitt confirmed that arrangement, saying Trump had asked her to “continue serving as a top advisor to him on the outside.”
“My fight is entering a new phase, but it is far from over,” Leavitt added, pledging to remain a vocal supporter of Trump, MAGA and the Republican Party.
Leavitt has served as White House press secretary since Trump returned to office in January 2025. She was 27 when Trump selected her for the position, making her the youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history.
Before joining Trump’s second administration, Leavitt served as national press secretary for his 2024 presidential campaign. She previously worked in the White House press operation during Trump’s first term and later served as communications director for Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Leavitt also ran for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022, winning the Republican nomination in the state’s 1st Congressional District before losing the general election to Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas.
In her farewell statement, Leavitt thanked Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, her staff and colleagues, as well as her husband and family for supporting her during her time in the administration.
