  • Senator Bill Cassidy will vote to confirm Todd Blanche despite reservations.
  • Cassidy acknowledged Blanche showed "poor judgement" but supports the nomination.
  • Blanche is a former personal lawyer for Trump and currently acting attorney general.
  • Cassidy's backing clears the path; confirmation now nearly certain by the narrowest of margins in a full Senate vote.

President Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, Todd Blanche, was set for confirmation on Friday after a key Republican holdout said he would vote in favor.

Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana said he agreed that Blanche — a former personal lawyer for Trump who is already serving as acting attorney general — had shown “poor judgement.”

But Cassidy said he would nevertheless support the nomination, meaning Blanche is now all but certain to win confirmation by the narrowest of margins in a full Senate vote.
