A Russian court on Thursday charged and remanded in custody until February an Uzbek citizen over the killing of Russian army general Igor Kirillov, which Kyiv claimed to have orchestrated.
Moscow’s Basmanny court charged Akhmadzhon Kurbonov with committing a “terrorist act”, illegally having explosives and “fabricating arms”, a day after detaining him over the assassination.
He faces possible life in prison.
Kirillov and his assistant were killed when an explosive device attached to a scooter exploded outside a Moscow residential apartment building on Tuesday.
Russian security services arrested Kurbonov a day later.
Kurbonov, born in 1995, appeared in court wearing a grey t-shirt and looking at the ground as the verdict was read out.
In footage released by Russian security services Wednesday, the man said he was promised “$100,000 and a European passport” for carrying out the attack.
Kirillov was the highest ranking Russian military official to be killed in a string of assassinations claimed by Kyiv.
Kurbonov was placed in detention shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced the killing as “terrorism” and admitted a security failure.
