Scientists in China have discovered a new tick-borne virus in Hubei Province, China, whose capital city is Wuhan, the same region where COVID-19 originated and spread across the world, claiming millions of lives.
Naturally, this has heightened fears and public anxiety regarding the spread of a new virus. Scientists are calling it the Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV). This virus was discovered after scientists investigated why 30% of patients in the region were experiencing severe flu-like and hemorrhagic symptoms.
Symptoms and effects of the virus
Scientists detected traces of the virus in 1.3% of thousands of ticks that were sampled from 15 different provinces in China. The virus is contracted through the bite from an infected vector, specifically the Asian longhorned tick.
Patients infected with ALTNV experienced fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, low blood platelet counts and elevated liver enzymes. The symptoms are also similar to those caused by COVID-19.
Among people with ALTNV, coinfected individuals experienced worse symptoms including kidney impairment. These individuals had been infected by a tick carrying both ALTNV and Dabie bandavirus (DBV). According to the records, seven coinfected patients died. Therefore, the fatality rate is 18% in coinfected individuals.
What it means for China and the rest of the world
The virus is widely distributed across China. There is an immediate need for better healthcare diagnostics and prevention measures. Since it is a vector-borne illness, prevention strategies heavily rely on vector control and personal protection. Members of the public are advised to use EPA-approved insect repellents and wear clothing that fully covers the skin. Avoiding outdoor activities has also been recommended as personal preventative measure.
Researchers have also urged farmers to treat livestock with tick-control pesticides as ticks feed on farm animals, thereby infecting the food chain. Routine dual-testing protocols are also being implemented in hard-hit regions.
Given China’s global reputation regarding disease outbreaks, the government has adopted a policy of rigorous scientific transparency. This is a shift away from containment-focused political response of the pre-COVID era. Moreover, the government has not issued a public health emergency or implemented lockdowns. Officials maintain that the risk of a population-wide pandemic is non-existent.
Why do viruses originate in China?
Scientists suggest that China’s emergence as an epicenter of virus outbreaks is caused by ecological factors and deep demographic shifts. Moreover, following the outbreak of COVID-19, China has developed a sophisticated operational framework of pathogen tracking. Therefore, China finds more viruses because it is extensively tracking disease outbreaks through its long-term surveillance program.
Central China features a biodiverse subtropical ecosystem. Therefore, it hosts a massive variety of bats, rodents, birds, and ticks. This leads to a large variety of disease-causing pathogens. In addition, China’s rapidly growing population means the divide between urban and rural areas is reducing. Residential zones and farms run side by side, making it easier for viruses to spread from animals to humans.
