The top US military officer on Wednesday said Washington had seen no signs that other regional foes of Israel were looking to join the attack by Hamas.
“I have not seen any indications of additional players that are going to get involved to the detriment of Israel,” said General Charles Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a NATO meeting in Brussels.
President Joe Biden has ordered US ships and warplanes to move closer to Israel, while also sending fresh military aid.
“This is one of the reasons we adjusted our force posture. It’s not only in support of Israel, but it’s also to deter future action,” Brown said.
Standing next to Brown, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated a warning from Biden to Israel’s enemies not to get involved.
“For any country, for any organisation, for anyone thinking about trying to take advantage of the agony in Israel to try to widen this conflict or to try to spill more blood. We have just one word. Don’t,” he said.
