OpenAI’s “Aeon” has recently surfaced through developer code strings and AI communities. The latest model is speculated to be built with the assistance of an unreleased model called “GPT-Astra”. OpenAI has allegedly developed this model to compete with xAI’s “Grok Bot”.
“Aeon” means an indefinitely long period of time. Unlike conventional chatbots that respond to a single prompt, rumors suggest that Aeon will be capable of managing long-term, multistep cloud tasks. The 24/7 autonomous agent will have the capacity to undertake complex automated coding tasks and run background processes.
Therefore, unlike a regular chatbot, Aeon can complete multi-step workflows in the background. For instance, you could give it a coding task and close your laptop. Aeon would continue working24/7 in the background until it sends you a direct message informing you that the task is complete.
The model was uncovered after references to it were discovered within the backend code for ChatGPT’s Android, web, and Codex platforms. One line of the code reads, “If a message is sent by a user, it is recorded under the user’s account name; if not sent by a user, it is recorded under Aeon.” This means that Aeon can perform tasks and log messages independently without requiring the user to press “Enter”.
Rumors suggest that this tool could be officially released between September 24 and September 29. Analysts note that we are entering a major “Agent Wave”. Platforms like Anthropic are also rumored to be preparing to release personal agents within the next 30 days.
