Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Moscow is trying to “defend its right to exist” in the face of Western efforts to “destroy” his country.

“Russia is not challenging the elites of the West, Russia is just trying to defend its right to exist,” the Russian leader said at an annual speech at Russian think tank Valdai Club. He accused the West of trying to “destroy (Russia), wipe if off the face of the political map.”
