As the fallout from Russia’s invasion of neighbour Ukraine intensifies, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned that World War 3 “will be nuclear and destructive.”

In a thinly veiled threat to NATO, Lavrov said that any World War 3 would be fought with nuclear weapons—a statement that comes just days after President Vladimir Putin warned that any country sending troops to Ukraine would face severe consequences, according to the report.

The Foreign Minister went on to say that Moscow was prepared to enter a second round of talks aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine, and that Kiev was deliberately delaying the process at the request of the US.

“We are ready for the second round of negotiations, but the Ukrainian side is delaying (the process) at the behest of the Americans,” said Lavrov.

According to a Russian source close to the negotiations, the second round of talks was supposed to take place later on Wednesday near the Belarusian-Polish border, after the first attempt at diplomacy ended on Monday.

Lavrov also attempted to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this morning, claiming that Russia’s forces “will not allow Ukraine to obtain nuclear weapons”.
