Russia has opened an extremism probe against former separatist commander and nationalist blogger Igor Girkin after detaining him, court documents showed on Friday.

Girkin, better known by his alias Igor Strelkov, was arrested earlier Friday and brought into a Moscow court after having repeatedly criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin on social media. He faces up to five years in prison.
