A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck central Peru on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, sending strong tremors through parts of the country.
The USGS located the earthquake about 38 kilometers northwest of Upahuacho, in Peru. The German Research Centre for Geosciences, or GFZ, had initially reported the quake at magnitude 6.5 and placed its depth at around 10 kilometers.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 1800 GMT. There were no immediate official reports of casualties or major damage following the initial shaking, while authorities continued assessing the situation in affected communities.
Peru is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions, and earthquakes are relatively common across the country.
Officials are expected to monitor the area for aftershocks and provide further information as damage assessments and reports from communities near the epicenter become available over the coming several hours.
