Sweden is facing a rare measles outbreak linked to the Urkult folk music festival. Health authorities have confirmed 21 cases across several regions as of August 19.
The Public Health Agency of Sweden said all known cases are connected to Urkult. The festival took place in Näsåker, in Sollefteå municipality, from July 30 to August 2.
The number of confirmed infections has risen quickly. Authorities reported 11 cases on August 18. One day later, the total had increased to 21.
Most cases involve children and teenagers
Most of those infected are under the age of 18. In addition, the majority had not been vaccinated against measles.
Cases have been reported in several parts of Sweden. These include Jämtland Härjedalen, Skåne, Stockholm, Västerbotten, Gotland, Värmland and Västernorrland.
Health officials say the outbreak is unusual for Sweden. Measles vaccination is included in the country’s childhood immunisation programme, and vaccination coverage is high.
Acting state epidemiologist Erik Sturegård said Sweden’s strong vaccination levels reduce the risk of a large nationwide outbreak. However, people without enough protection can still become seriously ill.
Authorities carry out contact tracing
Regional health teams are now tracing people who may have been exposed to confirmed cases.
Officials have also contacted festival visitors and shared advice about possible symptoms. People who develop signs of measles are being urged to contact healthcare providers before visiting a clinic.
This step is important because measles spreads very easily.
The virus can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People can also become infected after spending time in the same indoor space.
An infected person may spread measles before they realise they are sick. According to Swedish health authorities, transmission can occur from four days before a rash appears until four days afterward.
What are the symptoms of measles?
Early symptoms often include fever, a dry cough, runny nose and irritated eyes.
A red rash usually appears several days later. The incubation period is normally around 10 to 12 days. However, symptoms can sometimes appear up to 21 days after exposure.
Swedish health authorities say two doses of the measles vaccine provide strong and long-lasting protection.
Adults are also being encouraged to check their vaccination history. This is especially important for people who may have received only one dose.
Authorities continue to monitor the Urkult-linked outbreak. They are also working with regional health services to identify new cases and limit further spread.
