London and Paris have agreed a “groundbreaking” pilot scheme to return migrants who arrive in Britain by crossing the Channel on small boats, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Thursday.

“For the very first time, migrants arriving via small boat will be detained and returned to France in short order,” Starmer said.

He added: “In exchange for every return, a different individual will be allowed to come here” safely.

In the coming weeks, those coming to Britain would be subject to “strict security checks” and only individuals “who have not tried to enter the UK illegally” would be eligible, Starmer noted.
