The United Kingdom will shortly announce $10 billion in new orders for Boeing planes, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Thursday, touting the two countries’ new trade deal.
“There’s going to be an announcement in the UK that they are buying $10 billion worth of Boeing planes later today,” he said.
“But I’m going to let the… airline announce it because that’s theirs to do,” he added with a grin.
Boeing declined comment, and Trump administration officials released no additional details about the aviation component of the trade agreement.
The deal negotiated between US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will reduce tariffs on British cars and steel, while maintaining a 10 percent baseline levy on British goods.
Britain will in return open up markets to US beef and farm products despite consumer concerns over their quality.
As Trump has launched trade wars against partners, Boeing has been most directly impacted so far by the standoff with China.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said last month that Chinese carriers had stopped accepting new aircraft from the US giant.
Shares of Boeing jumped 4.3 percent in early afternoon trading.
