United States Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, officially announced that the country has launched “on-orbit space control weapons.” The mysterious weapons serve to strengthen the deterrence and defense capabilities of the United States against evolving threats presented by China and Russia. The official confirmation was given by Meink at the annual Air, Space and Cyber Conference held in Maryland.

What are the mysterious space weapons?

The exact specifications and the number of weapons deployed remain highly classified due to security reasons. However, defense analysts note that unlike historical anti-satellite missiles, these mysterious weapons are likely based on low-debris systems. The US also declared a moratorium on destructive-anti satellite (ASAT) missile tests. This is because the debris released from such weapons also has the potential to destroy America’s own space equipment.

The low-debris weapons do not cause hazardous orbital debris and are likely to include lasers and high-powered microwave systems. These weapons are highly adept at causing enemy satellites to move out of their positions and jam communication links.

The Trump administration has maintained that control over space includes both kinetic and non-kinetic measures. The objective remains to disrupt, degrade and destroy adversary capabilities in the interest of security. This official announcement comes amid rumors that rival nations have been employing satellite intelligence to supply sensitive data to Iran.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese entities supplied critical satellite imagery to Iran. It is reported that this data leak enabled Iran to precisely strike US military facilities such as the drone stike in Jordon in July 2026 that killed three US service members. Therefore, the US is increasingly exploring technologies to hinder adversaries from using orbital intelligence to strike US forces.

China and Russia warn against space arms race

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has condemned this move by the US, and alleges that it has escalated an arms race to secure space hegemony. Political analysts also note that the US has transitioned from ground-based defense to offensive assets in space. China has also maintained that it will not “stand by and do nothing”, but will weaponize its own space assets for security.

Russia has also condemned the deployment of these weapons by the US. It has accused the US of triggering a severe security dilemma. In response, US authorities allege that Russia has itself been practicing offensive space manoeuvres for years. These include the launch of a satellite reportedly carrying anti-satellite weapons in 2024. It has also pointed out Russia’s ongoing operations concerning a space-based nuclear EMP concept.

This marks the first time that the US has publicly announced its operations regarding space assets. Historically, the US has maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity.
