A US official spoke with imprisoned US citizen Paul Whelan in Russia on Thursday to brief him on the release of Brittney Griner in a prisoner swap, a senior Biden administration official said.

A senior official “spoke at length today with Paul from prison to talk through today’s news,” the Biden administration official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
