The United States has apprehended a Cuban national and will remove him from the country over his “subversive” work on behalf of the communist-led island’s government, the US State Department said Wednesday.
Carlos Antonio Lloga Dominguez “spent more than a decade working as a foreign subversive for the Communist Cuban regime’s premier influence and intelligence front group in the United States,” spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio terminated the US legal status of Lloga Dominguez, his wife and son, and they “are now in federal custody pending removal from our country,” Pigott said.
Washington has cranked up pressure on Cuba in recent months, imposing an energy blockade and several rounds of sanctions that have deepened an already dire economic crisis.
President Donald Trump has made clear he would like to see a change of leadership, pointing to Washington’s overthrow of Venezuela’s socialist president Nicolas Maduro and installation of a Washington-friendly successor as a possible blueprint for what he would like to achieve in Cuba.
As part of its pressure tactics, the United States recently indicted former president Raul Castro, brother of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, over the downing of two civilian planes three decades ago.
The standoff is hurting ordinary Cubans, with the fuel shortages exacerbating recurring power cuts of up to 40 hours at a stretch and bringing transport across the island to a near standstill.
