The United States on Friday denounced a ruling by Venezuela’s top court that President Nicolas Maduro won reelection, saying all evidence pointed to a victory by opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.

“This ruling lacks all credibility, given the overwhelming evidence that Gonzalez received the most votes on July 28,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said in a statement.

“The will of the Venezuelan people must be respected,” he said.
