What Everyone Should Know Before They Get a Job in Tech

Technology is the fastest growing industry in the world, and there’s always room for more professionals. With so much rapid evolution and innovation, it can be hard to keep up as a newcomer. Some people oversimplify the roles they’re after and only look at the highest paying jobs, but there’s far more to landing your dream job in tech than just having the right credentials. Here’s what you need to know before getting your first job in tech.

You Need a Good Education

This should be fairly obvious that having a good education is what’ll ultimately net you your first job. But what you may not know is how diverse the tech industry actually is. You don’t need one specific type of degree to start your career. There’s a whole slew of degrees you can choose to specialize in. Here are the degrees you can choose from:

  • Programming
  • Computer science
  • Data science
  • Mathematics with a focus on calculus and statistics
  • Computer engineering
  • Information systems

In today’s society, all you’ll need is to get a BA, which is roughly four years of college. You can take it a step further and acquire a master’s in this field. If you do, you’ll be more likely to be chosen as a candidate due to your extensive education. No matter how you go about your education, you still need to pay for it. The average cost of a BA in tech is typically somewhere between $27,000 to $34,000, but it really depends on the college you go to.

A master’s degree can be almost $67,000 on average. To pay these costs, your best bet is to go to a private lender and take out private student loans or refinance your existing ones. You can look to private lenders because they can offer lower interest rates, which makes the loan easier to pay back and easier for you to focus on your degree. You may also want to use a student loan calculator to determine how much you’ll be paying back each month. This particularly useful if you’re trying to lower your monthly expenses overall.

You Must Be Adaptable

Because of how quickly technology evolves, you must evolve along with it. This is why one of the skills employers look for, regardless of your specialty, is adaptability. There’ll come a time in your career where your old strategy and work ethics won’t suffice. Technology is one of the most innovative industries to date and you must show you have what it takes to make the necessary changes.

You Need to Be Willing to Work with a Team

When you work in technology, you won’t be working alone. You’ll always be working together with an assigned team. Even if you’re more of the lone wolf type, teamwork is paramount when it comes to being successful in technology. For example, if you were creating a game for a company, you wouldn’t be solely responsible. You’d be working with the director, concept designers and animators. Your tasks may be your own, but it’s all a part of a joint effort.
