The Internet is slow or down in the whole of Pakistan. Many Pakistanis using different internet services reported slow internet connection on Wednesday.

While internet speeds are generally poor for most internet services in Pakistan, the issue was different this time.

Reason for slow internet in Pakistan

According to an ISP provider, multiple international cables were broken.

“Submarine Cable Fault Disrupts #Internet Services Across #Pakistan. Internet service providers (#ISPs) across Pakistan have been notified by #PTCL that an outage in one of the international upstream networks has occurred once again,” a user tweeted.

Multiple reports of affected users were seen all over the internet.

Many internet service providers are also informing customers of the reason for the slow internet speeds.

“Slow #internet browsing or no internet browsing #karachi #Pakistan,” another person tweeted.

“This is to update you that we are facing internet degradation due to multiple international cables (MENA, AAE-1 & SMW5) being broken in Egypt’s terrestrial segment, due to which westbound traffic is affected,” a user shared the screenshot of Transworld Associates’ email.

The ‘fault in the cables’

Many users shared that there might be some sort of fault with one of the international submarine cables called the SMW5. According to ProPakistani,  Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also confirmed that international cables were the culprit.

So far, there have been no arrangements made to restore the connections. There is also no update from PTA or other service providers on when the issue will be resolved for Pakistani internet users.

According to Datareportal.com, Pakistan had over 82.90 million internet users in January 2022.
