Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of a BRICS summit in Russia, Chinese state news agency Xinhua said.

China and Iran are political and economic partners, in part due to their stance on the war in Ukraine.

Iran plays a key role in the Middle East, where it backs a string of powerful armed groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
