The top Democrat in the US Senate warned Wednesday of what he called a “devastating blow” to voting rights laws inflicted by a Supreme Court decision that limited the use of race in drawing electoral districts.

“Today, the Supreme Court turned its back on one of the most sacred promises in American democracy — the promise that every voice counts,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement, adding that it would lead to “fewer protections for voters, more power for politicians.”
