According to the Gun Violence Archive, gun violence increased over the Fourth of July weekend, with shootings reported in nearly every US state, with at least 220 people killed and 570 others injured.
According to published statistics, the number of weekend shootings was nearly equal to the number of resulting injuries, with well over 500 shootings documented nationwide between July 1-4, according CBS.
Only five states did not report one or more shootings during that time period.
The Gun Violence Archive classified at least 11 of the gun violence incidents reported over the holiday weekend as mass shootings.
A mass shooting occurs when four or more people, excluding the shooter, are killed or injured by gunshots.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 315 mass shootings across the country, with approximately 22,500 deaths caused by gun violence.
So far, the number of injuries linked to gun violence has surpassed the total number of deaths.
During the same holiday weekend in 2021, more than 180 people were killed and 516 were injured in shootings.
