The United States has cancelled a deportation flight scheduled for Friday to return Venezuelan migrants to their native country, Caracas said, as fears mount of open conflict between the two countries.

Venezuela received “the decision by the United States government to unilaterally suspend the return of Venezuelan citizens” on Friday, the Interior Ministry said late Thursday on Telegram.

The apparent flight suspension to Venezuela comes after months of pressure by US President Donald Trump’s administration that has seen a major naval buildup in the region, accompanied by strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats that have killed nearly 90 people.

Washington this week seized an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast and on Thursday imposed sanctions against relatives of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and six companies shipping the South American country’s oil.

The US Department of Homeland Security and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to emails seeking confirmation of the apparent flight cancellation.
