ChatGPT Calls User the N-Word During Music Search

ChatGPT Used the N-Word

In a recent Reddit post, a user claimed with evidence that ChatGPT used the N-word to address them during routine music searches. Unfortunately, this recent use of slurred words by ChatGPT is not the first, as there have been many instances in the past.

How ChatGPT used slurred words to address users

According to a Reddit user, kronos_2023, ChatGPT casually used the N-word using the AI to search a metal song. The thread with the title “My ChatGPT said the N-Word” explained how the whole thing started. The redditor explained that they were trying to search for a song they forgot with lyrics snippets. Then ChatGPT addresses them with an N-word in place of a word like bro. They also stated that they are having a normal conversation with a basic version (not jailbreak or tamper with), and with no mention of race at all.

ChatGPT used N-Word

The post has since gotten a lot of upvotes on r/ChatGPT with many comments from other ChatGPT users. Some even made jokes about trying to trick ChatGPT into saying terrible things every time without getting slurs like this. It’s quite shocking that ChatGPT used the N-word even when the chat was just about music.

Not the first time AI chatbots have used slurred words

Some comments under the post confirm that many users have experienced similar replies from the chatbots, and this is not the first time this has happened.

A Reddit post in the past titled, “Chat GPT Saying the N word with no prompt,” also said the chatbot used the N-word during their conversation. Also, another post on Reddit claims ChatGPT also used the N-word without promoting it.

Surprisingly, this is not only peculiar to OpenAI ChatGPT. Also, xAI’s Groks got its fair share of criticism for using N-words and also referring to itself as Mechahitler. This does not prove a bug or necessarily a new break in the AI filters. Many have argued that the model of making AI personalities “more natural” is why the chatbot keeps dishing out slurs.

This isn’t some esoteric edge case that OpenAI just learned about yesterday. Last year, people were already obsessed with attempting to get ChatGPT to speak the N-Word. The least they can do is to provide a version of the chatbot that is safe from any slurs. This is crucial, especially for users who are having a normal conversation.
