Chevron has suspended production of a large natural gas project offshore Israel following a request from the country’s government coinciding with the US-Israeli attack on Iran, the company said Monday.

Chevron “can confirm that it was instructed by Israel’s Ministry of Energy to temporarily shut-in production at the Leviathan Production Platform on February 28, 2026,” a Chevron spokesperson told AFP.

Security of personnel is “our top priority,” Chevron said. “Any questions regarding the security situation should be addressed to the appropriate authorities of the State of Israel.”

The US company operates Leviathan, which is located about 10 kilometers offshore Dor, Israel. The project, which came online in December 2019, provides gas to Israel, Egypt and Jordan.

Oil and natural gas prices have surged in the wake of the war initiated by US-Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday

On Monday, the Israeli military said it began a new strikes on Tehran, while Gulf monarchies threatened to retaliate and tankers were attacked off Oman.

Qatar’s state-run energy firm said it had halted liquefied natural gas production following Iranian attacks on facilities at two of its main gas processing bases.

Chevron said it is “closely monitoring” the situation at another Middle Eastern project, but that operations were running normally at the onshore Partitioned Zone operation, where it partners with Kuwait Gulf Oil Company.
